ASHRAE Show Daily 2014 - Day 1 - (Page 6)
AHRI, ASHRAE, CRAA to Host
Technology Forum Wednesday
NEW YORK-AHRI and ASHRAE,
in conjunction with the China Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning
Industry Association (CRAA), will
host a free one-day technology forum at the Javits Center tomorrow,
Jan. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in
Room 1B03.
Technical experts and members
from all three organizations will present technical papers on a variety of
topics. Presentations include "Building HVAC&R and Energy Trends;"
"Revision Progress of Energy Efficiency Standards for Unitary AirConditioner and Water Chilling Units
in China;" "Refrigeration Outlook:
Refrigerants, Systems, and Regulatory Perspective;" "Development
and Application of a Twin-Screw Expander for Heat Recovery System;"
"International Standards for the Indoor Environment-Where Are We
and Do They Apply Worldwide?"
"Prototype Evaluation and Test Standardization for Magnetic Regenerators
Operating at Near Room Temperature;" "VRF Systems for Comfort and
Energy Efficiency;" "R-32 Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps;" "Magnetic
Bearing Centrifugal Chiller Technology;" and "AHRI Low Global Warming
Potential (GWP) Alternative Refrigerants Evaluation Program-Summary of Phase One." Speakers include
Mick Schwedler, Xiuping Zhang,
Lei Jia, Rafael Castillo, Ziwen Xing,
Bjarne Olesen, Jianghong Wo, Galen
Yin, Mark Stanga, Greg Tutwiler, and
Xudong Wang.
It presents a great opportunity for
American and Chinese HVAC&R
professionals to meet and exchange
ideas relevant to the industry and to
foster closer relationships.
Onsite registration is 9:30 a.m. to
10 a.m., at Room 1B03. You may attend all or some of the presentations.

level. No badge or ticked required.
Attendees will earn 1 NY PDH, 1 AIA
Learning Unit and 1 LEED AP credit.
Energy disclosure requirements,
now required in seven U.S. cities and
numerous European Union countries,
require periodic reporting of energy
consumption for certain buildings.
"The speakers will tackle the issue
of building energy use on the large scale
and what major cities are doing about it,"
said Mike Eardley, P.E., seminar chair.
"A cost-effective solution is not major
construction and new efficient equipment, but tuning up existing HVAC&R
systems and verifying they are operating
correctly. Occupant behavior also has a
major impact. Attendees will learn the
energy penalties associated with these issues. We also will discuss how city-level
energy disclosure requirements take a
necessary first step in communicating
energy use information in buildings so
that corrective action can be taken."
The seminar presents a new energy
benchmarking model to support comparative energy performance evaluation across commercial buildings.
The study analyzes patterns of energy consumption across New York City
buildings and models the determinants
of building energy efficiency to establish a robust model for normalization
across multiple characteristics. Energy efficiency has traditionally been
achieved through physical retrofits.
An alternative approach is presented
that harnesses data from smart meters
in an eco-informatic system and provides feedback to building occupants
on their energy consumption.
Eardley said use of eco-informatic/
eco-feedback systems offer a mechanism to close the feedback loop between occupants and energy consumption. Reductions of 5% to 15% have
been noted with such systems.
"Most importantly, the use of such
systems has been shown to be extremely
cost effective in comparison with other
energy efficiency initiatives," he said.

at the Javits as part of the ASHRAE
Winter Conference.
* Two new Product and Technology
Theatres, running almost continuously
for all three days.
* Product Locators in the lobby area
to help visitors. In addition, a smart
phone/tablet app at www.ahrexpo.com
provides access to product locators, exhibitor list, booth numbers, and an interactive floor plan.
* The Building Automation and Control Showcase and Software Center feature more than 130 exhibitors with building automation and software products.
"This year's AHR Expo is the largest
HVAC&R event ever held in the Northeast and that means even more opportunities for visitors to accomplish their goals.
With over 1,900 exhibitors from around
the world here in New York, the Show
is the ultimate hands-on search engine
to see the latest products, meet directly
with manufacturers, discuss projects with
product engineers and get an up-close
look at the innovations and trends that will
drive our industry," said Stevens.
2014, From Page 1
In keeping with the positive outlook
for next year, 90% of the HVAC&R
manufacturers said they believe sales
will increase, with 32% expecting sales
increases of more than 10%. Thirty-one
percent forecast sales increases between
5% and 10%, and 27% expect increases
of less than 5%. Ten percent believe sales
will remain the same, while no respondents predict sales will decrease. This
year's survey registered a 4% increase
over last year when 86% of the respondents forecasted sales would increase
and 3% expected sales to decrease.
When asked which market segments
would be the most promising in the new
year, "Hospitals/Health Care" ranked
first, followed by "Light Commercial."
"Heavy Commercial." "Data/Telecom
Centers" and "Office Buildings" were
also ranked highly.
Regarding the industry categories
where HVAC&R manufacturers see the
best prospects for business, it was fairly
evenly divided between "Maintenance/Replacement" (35%), "New Construction"
(33%), and "Retrofit/Renovation" (32%).
"Energy efficiency" and "Sustainability" topics were also the most frequent responses to the question "What
do you see as the most important trend
or issue in the HVAC&R industry."
To meet this need for economic
growth and more energy-efficient solutions, two-thirds of the respondents
(66%) said they plan to introduce new
products at the 2014 AHR Expo. Of
these respondents, 54% plan to introduce
products that improve energy efficiency.
