DJ E Motion It’ 10:30 p.m. on Emerald Princess, and high atop the Promenade Deck, an out-of-this-world party is just about to get underway at Skywalkers Nightclub, a swank, late-night bar and dancing locale that caters to young and old cruisers alike. Skywalkers is large with plenty of tables and chairs, neon lights, a large bar area and wide open dance floor. It’s my job to make sure people use it, and I do so by mixing up tunes that range from the Hip-Hop 50 Cent to Tony Bennett, Motown classics to obscure disco. The 2 a.m.-3 a.m. slot may feature Hip-Hop tunes while an earlier hour might feature Rock and Roll classics. I use a digital blending of the old with the new to create a symphonic bridge between the generations. The mixes have to be eclectic if Skywalkers is to remain at the vanguard of the ship’s evening entertainment, particularly among the 18 to 99 set. That’s right, the 18-99 set! In my five years of working with Princess, it’s been a constant challenge keeping my musical mixes fresh and exciting for such a diverse clientele. I know I’ve done a good job when I see everyone on the floor dancing and having a good time, young and old alike. My job is like dj’ing for a wedding, with an edge. Admittedly the sharp demographic mix of the club’s patrons is more akin to a wedding party than to a conventional urban nightclub, but the musical offerings served up at Skywalker’s bear little resemblance to “wedding party music.” My custom music mixes are so unique, of such high quality and have such vast listener appeal that they could easily play on any radio station across the country. At Skywalkers, every night, I get to play the enviable role of “musical-Jedi,” taking guests on an interstellar journey through more than 50 years of popular music.
