Aviation Week Market Supplement September 10, 2007 - (Page 14) F-35: THE WORLD’S FIRST TRULY GLOBAL WEAPON SYSTEM ALLIANCE most recent budget cuts in F-35 production would increase the average per-copy price by 4%. “It’s a spiral,” says Burbage. “Our number one issue going forward is to stabilize funding for the program, but there is no denying the realities we face.” The good news is that the Lightning II has agreements with all partner nations, and the F-35 leaders are working hard to keep the program sold. NEXT STEPS The F-35 Lightning II is not a mature program, and the team still faces substantial hurdles. Flight testing continues following a power issue during the 19th test flight three months ago. The electrical system automatically reconfigured and restored power, but it raised concerns about the 270- VDC-based electrical system and multifunction electrohydrostatic actuators. The issues created by U.S. funding cuts ripple across the multinational partnership. For example, the U.K. variant faces weight/power issues with regard to carrier landings, and the F-35 is the only aircraft that will be able to land on the two new aircraft carriers planned by the U.K. Should the Royal Navy decide to cut its carrier program, as some predict, it will leave Italy as the lone international partner requiring a carrier variant. As the supply chain ramps up to meet Crowley’s push for one-month production centers, the sheer volume of shipping and distribution involved is substantial. Suppliers believe the logistics are under control, but Gobel remains concerned about not having second sources. All of this will test how well each partner country adheres to its commitments; whether the success of a design team that spanned the globe in creating allnew stealth, power and avionics capabilities can continue; and how well a supply chain that ranges from Europe to Australia to every U.S. state will perform. Given the complexity of today’s security threats, success has never been more important. PRODUCED BY: AVIATION WEEK Strategic Programs in association with Inspiratext Creative Services, LLC Aviation Week & Space Technology Market Supplements are a product of AVIATION WEEK, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies.
