One advantage of NetCOS is interoperability of governmental, industrial, EADS and non-EADS assets. Fischer cites the use of the mobile NetCOS in 2005 with the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and Dassault Rafale combat aircraft. EADS Defense and Security, competing against both Thales and Lockheed Martin for the Qatar National Security Shield contract, won the bid after deploying NetCOS for a live experiment in the country. The experiment simulated subsystems of the security shield while using Qatari radars, Fischer says. NetCOS was also used to create an urban operations testbed for the German army. “Bonnland,” a 3D environment, was created and a real Faust command-and-control system and future soldier (IdZ) equipment were used, in addition to simulated generic mini unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned ground vehicles. One scenario called for a reconnaissance mission to identify threats before an unprotected supply convoy passed through Bonnland. The UAV overﬂew the village to investigate a ﬁre, supported by the UGV. Everything was displayed on Faust and on an IdZ portable control computer. NetCOS has been found to be useful in the real world of deployments, as well, evaluating threats facing German troops in peacekeeping and stability operations in Afghanistan. Fischer says it was tapped to assess the threat posed by light aircraft packed with explosives attacking a cultural target. The system was used for creation of the Multi UAV Simulation Testbed (MUST) to support European ministries of defense in deﬁning UAV operational concepts and integrating them into command, control, communication, computer, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance architectures. The environment consists of mediumaltitude, long-endurance and tactical UAVs with synthetic aperture radar and electro-optical/infrared sensors, and real ground stations. Fischer says MUST was set up in France in 2006, and is replicable in Germany and Spain. In Sweden, Saab has established a Capability Development Center (CDC) with showroom-style facilities within each business unit of the company and in a main hub at Saab Systems in Jarfalla, outside Stockholm. According to CDC Director Johan Leander, the capability has been built up since 2005 when a gap  was detected in how the Swedish armed forces trained their command, control, communications, computing and intelligence (C4I) forces. Air, land and naval forces working in a joint environment all needed to exchange data and share operational pictures in a multinational context, says Leander. Saab moved to link several of its C4I systems and solutions in a distributed simulation environment. This included Swedish and South African systems, the latter provided through Saab’s subsidiary in that country. In a demonstration viewed by DTI, the CDC auditorium in Jarfalla was conﬁg- ured with eight large display screens showing a variety of applications, including a battleﬁeld-management system, a Saab Gripen ﬁghter jet ﬂight simulation, a StriC air defense command-and-control screen and an overview display. The systems and applications were connected through a new software suite and integration platform developed by Saab and designated WISE (widely integrated systems environment).
