Eurotorp Group is a joint venture by DCNS, WASS and Thales that has developed and is building the MU90 Impact weapon system. Like the Black Shark heavyweight torpedo, the MU90 features a Saft-supplied Al-AgO battery system. France accepted its ﬁrst batch of 25 (out of 300) MU90 Block 1 torpedoes last June. Other customers include Australia, Denmark, Germany, Italy and Poland. The other main player is Raytheon, whose Mk 46 family of weapons is a staple of many naval arsenals. The U.S. company has in recent years developed and ﬁelded the Mk 50 and Mk 54 lightweight torpedo. The Mk 54 beneﬁts from developments in software and tactics in the Mk 48 Adcap heavyweight program. MU90 Impact torpedo, produced by the Eurotorp consortium of DCNS, Thales and WASS, has been sold to six nations. The ﬁrst export customer for the Mk 54 is expected to be Turkey. A recent development was a test in which a Mk 54 torpedo was precision-delivered by a P-3C patrol plane from an altitude of 8,000 ft. using a LongShot wing-adapter kit. BAE Systems continues to tune the Mod 1 upgrade version of its Sting Ray lightweight torpedo, which is in use with the Royal Navy, Norway and Romania. Saab, meanwhile, is promoting a derivative of its 400-mm. (15.7-in.)dia. Torpedo 45 for network-centric environments. The multi-purpose TMS (torpedo mine sensor) weapon uses a common propulsion section in combination with speciﬁ c nose sections.
