Defense Technology International - July 2007 - (Page 28) WARFARE GUERRILLA F-16s dropped JDAMs, the Apaches fired Hellfire missiles and the PzH-2000 fi red dozens of high- explosive rounds. The bombardment peaked on Saturday, killing scores of Taliban and driving survivors to take cover in homes, some belonging to the families of police and militia. Taliban fighters murdered some family members; other civilians died when the Dutch fusillade hit their houses. In Chura, the fighting was loud, dirty and exhausting: Many soldiers fought around the clock for days. But at Kamp Holland, the mood was almost cheerful, especially among the howitzer crews, who finally had a chance to do what they’d trained for. “We’ve been firing all morning,” Sgt. 1st Class Richard exclaimed on June 17, yelling to be heard over the rumble of the howitzer’s diesel engine. He pointed toward Chura, where the exploding rounds could just be made out. By June 18, the battered Taliban force began pulling back. That morning, Dutch Sgt. Maj. Jos Leunissen, a mortarman, died when an 81-mm. round exploded in its tube. The loss of a second soldier tempered but did not break the victorious mood. Back in The Hague, however, Leunissen’s death caused a minor panic. Dutch forces could withdraw to Kamp Holland or stay and fight. Perhaps sensing that defense ministry officials would order a retreat, Van Griensven declined to seek his superiors’ advice. He ordered all available troops to reinforce Chura, then counterattack. Five hundred Dutch soldiers and an equal number of Afghan police and militia assaulted the captured checkpoints with massive air and artillery support, while Australian special forces moved to blocking positions on major roads.
