That observation just as easily applies to our weblog Ares (www.aresblog.net). People who want to be in the know when it comes to the global business and issues of defense benefit from the news and information we present daily. Here’s just a sampling of what the international editors and contributors of DTI and its sister publication Aviation Week & Space Technology provide. NRO spacecraft take a wrong turn: Aviation Week broke the story that a pair of top-secret ocean-surveillance satellites operated by the National Reconnaissance Office were launched into the wrong orbits in June and has been following efforts to ax them. Support your local A400M: If the seven European nations planning to procure the Airbus military transport work together on one order rather than go it alone, they could save 15% on support costs. But working together seems to be a challenge. Bring on the Antonovs: Russia’s United Aircraft Corp. is looking at a possible restart of the production line for the An-124, the world’s largest cargo transport. Manufacturing more of these giants would meet growing demand for the plane, as evidenced by heavy leasing schedules to European nations and the U.S. Air Force. Darpa seeks Internet 2.0+: The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is looking for “high-risk, high-payoff ” ideas that will make network communications faster, cheaper and easier to administer. It is the Walrus: Darpa’s canceled heavy-lift project, a startling blend of airship and airplane technology, is still a viable choice for rapid global-response needs. JSF feels the heat: Heat dissipation is a huge problem for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. To catch up on these stories as well as the daily postings of our global staff of editors, go to DTI’s homepage, www.aviationweek.com/dti, and click on “Extras for this issue” under “DTI Interactive.” And to make sure you don’t miss anything, read Ares every day. It’s a guaranteed hit. —Sean Meade, Columbia, S.C.
