This, despite a rapidly transforming battlefield and a flood of prospective technologies, systems and processes emerging to counter new threats. To make a difference, we set our sights on moving well beyond a “magazine launch” to enable this globe-circling community to not only learn, but also to network and interact and share best practices. You already may have experienced the foundation of the “triad” that underpins our ongoing rollout: DTI magazine, the Defense Technology & Requirements conference, and our fast-growing Defense Channel and Ares blog on AviationWeek.com, now serving more than 1,500 visitors per day. This fall, we take even larger steps and invite you to join this growing print, online and face-to-face community: Real Time at DSEi/London. We’ll distribute thousands of copies of this issue of DTI at the ExCel Center and surrounding hotels, and cover the show with an international team of editors and reporters. If you can’t attend, check out DTI’s Ares blog (www.aviationweek.com/aw/blog/defense) to keep up with what happens there. You’ll be in good company: Ares is AVIATION WEEK’S most active and fastest-growing online community. Raising the Bar on Program Execution at A&D Programs. A&D Programs (Oct. 29-31 in Phoenix) presents the Top 20 global programs, and features the industry’s biggest customers including the USAF Air System Acquisition Center and U.S. Army Aviation Task Force, and OEM executives such as Airbus North America CEO Barry Eccleston and Dennis Muilenburg, vice president and general manager of Future Combat Systems for Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. In addition to a broad range of program evaluations, briefings and discussions, a new Program Excellence Best Practices Workshop and Awards program will be featured. Linking CEOs and Investors at A&D Finance. A&D Finance (Nov. 28-29 in New York) is a concentrated business briefing, co-produced with Credit Suisse, featuring C-level aerospace company executives and attended by Wall Street analysts, opinion leaders and influencers. Confirmed speakers include Ron Sugar, chairman and CEO of Northrop Grumman; Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Integrated Systems; Christopher E. Kubasik, executive vice president and CFO, Lockheed Martin Corp.; and Michael T. Strianese, president and CEO, L-3 Communications. DTI Editors Take On MRAP. From Wall Street to the streets of Iraq, one of the biggest program stories of the year is the planned production surge for Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected (MRAP) vehicles to protect soldiers from improvised explosive devices. This summer, as Pentagon planners and congressional leaders wrangled over how best to fast-track delivery of nearly 4,000 MRAPs to U.S. troops in Iraq by the end of the year, DTI announced plans for three months of extended coverage of the MRAP program. Last month’s issue launched the initiative, and this issue features additional coverage on European MRAP technology and a report on the MaxxPro MRAP. In October, DTI will feature a survey-style story on MRAP, including the main programs under contract, a technical look at the different armor and shaping technologies and how they work, and how the programs are running within the Pentagon. Obviously, MRAP is just one of the big targets we’re tracking on our editorial screens. The pace and scale of the defense technology business is constantly challenging us to stay ahead of the stories that make a difference in your work. Your increasing involvement—and that of more than 50,000 of your colleagues—in our magazine, events and online community validates our early efforts, and assures DTI will continue to grow as a source for leaders and a voice for leadership.
