Defense Technology International - October 2007 - (Page 40) OPERATIONS AMPHIBIOUS Australia’s LCM 8 landing craft will have to soldier on, now that the proposed LCM 2000 replacement has been put on hold. is at the core of U.S. ship-to-shore equipment-transport capabilities. Development of landing craft is not without problems. At the end of August, the Australian defense department announced it had suspended trials of six new-generation LCM 2000 watercraft from Thales Australia, pending investigation into structural issues that appeared during testing. According to the defense department, the watercraft are designed for use by the army to transfer personnel and supplies from ship to shore. “Defense is working with the builder, ADI Ltd. (trading as Thales Australia), to investigate the situation. As a prudent safety precaution, testing has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation,” reports a spokesman. The problem has no impact on the army’s watercraft capability, as the LCM 2000 fleet is still being tested. Watercraft capability will continue to be provided by the LCM 8 fleet. AUSTRALIAN DEFENSE DEPT.
