Meanwhile, for those who have been taking care of business on the road, here are some of the best posts from Ares in the past month: Radar Winner—Boeing selected Raytheon to provide an active electronically scanned array radar for 224 USAF F-15E ﬁghters. Disband the D.C. Punditocracy!—This extended op-ed by Robert Farley about disbanding the U.S. Air Force is now online in full, and revealed for what it is: a rather ill-structured and highly selective recycling of old arguments. Paying for the Next Revolution—Fred Kagan thinks that U.S. military policy is in a shambles, and he blames proponents of network- and information-centric warfare as the main culprits behind the mess. How Israel Whacked Syria: Part Two—Israel used several new intelligence-gathering and strike technologies in its Sept. 6 raid on Syria. Emerging details of the attack involve a train of capabilities extending from satellite observations to precision bombing of the suspect facility. Have You Flown a Ford Lately?—Boeing’s work on a high-altitude, long-endurance UAV moved forward with a successful four-day test of a hydrogen-fueled engine, including three days at a simulated altitude of 65,000 ft. It is collaborating with, among others, Aurora Flight Sciences, which provides the high-altitude test facility at Manassas, Va., and—revealed for the ﬁrst time—Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. Is Iraq Making EFP “Super-Bombs”?—Recent discoveries of arms caches in Iraq may be proof that local militias are making some of the deadly explosively formed penetrators used there. Fighting the Frogman Threat—Rheinmetall has adapted a Cold War tactic for countering Warsaw Pact frogmen to protect vessels and harbor installations against today’s terrorist frogmen: anti-personnel depth charges thrown o ships moored in harbor. Reaper Bombs Away—The MQ-9A Reaper armed reconnaissance UAV ﬁred its ﬁrst Hellﬁre missile at enemy combatants in the Deh Rawod region of Afghanistan, some 70 mi. from its base at Kandahar. Ground forces said the strike was e ective. More Radar P-3s—The latest supplemental defense request includes a cool $950 million for the Littoral Surveillance Radar System, comprising $725 million for radar pods and $225 million for work to enable more P-3C Block Modiﬁcation Upgrade Program aircraft to carry the radar. Future Russian Aircraft—The invaluable Secret Projects web site carries frame grabs from an early-2000s Russian TV documentary, ﬁlmed at the vast TsAGI windtunnel complex at Zhukovsky. While wind-tunnel models are not equivalent to real hardware, and sensitive material wouldn’t have been shown, the models are a clear indication of Russian industry and government thinking. The Merits of Cyber Domain—Bettina H. Chavanne recently posted an analysis of the cyber domain, arguing that it’s just as much a domain as land, sea and air. But an Air Force o cer at the Pentagon heartily disagrees.
