MRO 2008 Show News Briefing - April 7, 2008 - (Page 3) Delta-Chromalloy PMA Deal Is Said to Be Worth $1 Billion Delta TechOps (Booth 1001) comes to MRO 2008 having late last year chalked up “the largest and most significant Parts Manufacturing Approval agreement in the airline industry,” a deal with Chromalloy Gas Turbine for CFM56 parts said to be worth $1 billion-plus over ten years. It will make Delta TechOps the “largest third-party CFM engine overhaul provider in the world,” the airline unit says. Chromalloy is to develop PMA alternatives for a number of parts commonly used in the CFM56-7 and CFM56-5 engines, including several Life CFM56-5B Limited Parts, Delta says. “This is a significant development for the future of our industry and one that signals the dynamic, out-of-the-box strategy for which Delta TechOps is known,” said T Charaf— ony who is now Delta TechOps president (John Laughter has been advanced to maintenance AVIATION WEEK President Tom Henricks SHOW NEWS Briefing Publisher Greg Hamilton Editor-In-Chief John Morris Morrisoff@aol.com 860-365-0445 Senior Editor Rich Piellisch rich@piellisch.com 415-896-5988 Senior Art Director & IT Manager Kirk Fetzer Editorial Assistant Mara Morris Director of Sales Mark Flinn mark_flinn@aviationweek.com Operations Manager Erving Dockery, Jr. operations svp). The Delta-Chromalloy pact will result in 250 additional engine overhauls, Delta said. Delta TechOps performs CFM56-7 overhauls now (Delta Air Lines was launch customer for the CFM56-7 on 737s), and says its deal with Chromalloy will add the CFM56-5 to a capabilities list including the PW4000, PW2000, JT8D-219, CF680A, CF680C2 and CF34 models. “As engine of choice on Airbus A318, A319, A320 and A321 models, the CFM56-5 represents a significant addition to Delta TechOps’ overhaul and repair capabilities,” the firm says. CFM International, a joint venture of GE and Snecma, delivered the 18,000th CFM56, a -5B, to Airbus on February 8 for an A320 to be leased to China’s Shenzhen Airlines. The 19,000th will be delivered this year too. More on alternative CFM56 parts on Page 4. Cabins Addressed at MRO 2008 Show Cabin interiors, for the completion of new aircraft and the refurbishment of older ones, is an increasingly hot topic in MRO, so AVIATION WEEK has added interiors to its conference schedule and welcomes interior specialists to the trade show floor. Partners and PBL for the Warfighter It’s no secret that with a long war in a hostile climate, and budget constraints preventing replacement acquisitions, that military aircraft are being called on to do more and last longer. Lockheed Martin is moving to meet the challenge of keeping aircraft flying longer by integrating its service organizations, including MRO, upgrades, and modifications, with design and manufacturing. “We have the ability as the original equipment manufacturer to integrate more quickly,” says Marillyn Hewson, evp for global sustainment at Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems. “We have the entire infrastructure, so we are able to adapt and manage that and give them solutions in a shorter period of time,” she says of the firm’s Pentagon and other customers. Key to providing continuing value and reliability, is the concept of Performance-Based Logistics. With PBL, providers like Lockheed guarantee readiness. “Our customer wants predictability of performance,” Hewson says. “If they can pay for performance readiness as opposed to paying for individual repairs or tools or parts or services or data, if they can pay for some pre-determined level of reliability, that is what they want.” “We believe that partnering is critically important,” she adds. Hewson cites the example of Lockheedsupported Air Force maintenance depots, and an arrangement in Britain Marillyn Hewson. whereby Lockheed, in concert with RollsRoyce and Marshall Aerospace, provides full PBL support for the RAF’s C-130 transports. For newer equipment, “We are actually designing and building aircraft support sustainability into the weapon system itself,” Hewson says. “We did it on the F-22. We are doing it on the F-35.” New sensor technologies make the aircraft self-analyzing, allowing technicians to do “predictive maintenance.” Hewson and Kimberly Gavaletz, sustainment vp for the F-35 at Lockheed, are both participating in the Military MRO conference here this week.
