Members of the Association of the
Wall and Ceiling Industry were asked
to opine on what the future holds for
the wall and ceiling industry. More
specifically, members were asked two
questions-one about the next 10 years
and one about the next 100 years.
The first question is this: How
will the industry change in the next
10 years in response to today's and
tomorrow's challenges?
What follows are your colleagues'
individual responses. Since the projections are 10-years out, most of what
is written in this chapter likely will be
realized. Where will you and your
company be on the curve?
The manual labor segment
of the industry will not change dramatically.
Segments already influenced by digital
technology will continue to evolve on
the course they are on now. The result
of these two trends will be a more
productive workforce, which is all but
essential given the declining source
of skilled labor. Offsite prefabrication
and supply chain communications and
logistics will be the most accountable
for the productivity improvements.
Ergonomic improvements in design and powering of tools will be
beneficial to the workforce along
with increased use of lighter weight

building materials. Increasing sophisticated laser guided layout tools
will improve constructing nonlinear
wall and ceiling systems. Computer
controlled cutting technology, already
with a foothold in the industry, will
speed the prefabrication of building
components.

One of the biggest
challenges our industry faces today is communication.
How do suppliers talk to contractors?
How do contractors talk to clients?
Things remained the same for nearly
100 years. However, about 10 years
ago the Internet changed everything.
Today, contractors and clients can
find things online from a variety of
sources. Now, purchases are often made
based on price rather than relying on

The next 10 years will see a continuation
in refinement of current technology
innovations focused on reducing labor costs, increasing productivity and
safety. Laborsaving advancements in
technology will include new and improved battery tools and construction
automation technologies such as collated fastening systems and drywall
panel fabrication.

been in place for years. It's critical
that suppliers stay on top of digital
trends to remain in consideration for
projects going forward. Gone are the
days of running an ad in a magazine
and expecting the phone to ring.
Over the next 10 years, companies
must be diligent managing their
communications over a multitude of
channels that currently include print
ads, websites, social media, e-blasts,
webinars and smartphone apps. That
list continues to grow.
New technology is introduced to
make our lives easier every day. The
human factor is slowly being removed
with each "advancement." Ten years
from now, the ordering process will
be much different from what we see
today. Technology will be the driver
over long established buying relationships. It will be critical that the buying
process is quick, efficient, accurate and,
most importantly, easy! The companies
that manage those factors best will be
the most successful.

The next 10 years
in the construction
industry will prove both challenging
and exciting as we begin to see innovation go beyond product to focus on
quality construction, durability and
velocity. Smart technology inside the
home will be the norm and not the
exception, with intelligent buildings
and homes programmed to maximize
operational efficiency and occupant
comfort. Skilled labor shortages and
other construction constraints will be
overcome through automated systems
and computer-generated construction.
Just-in-time manufacturing will equate
to structural components crafted with
