operate our business in the next 10
years will change dramatically.
Technology is now allowing us to
visit project sites by cameras, allowing
us to review progress visually daily; this
will change as drones make their way
into our industry. Prefabrication construction is another major change we
see in the next 10 years; we already are
seeing this take place in some markets
throughout the country. We used to
build buildings, now we are in the risk
management business as well. We see
this becoming even more prevalent in
the next few years.

A decade from now, modular construc-
tion for large construction projects
such as office buildings and highrises will become not just an exterior
envelope scenario but an interior
wall system production item as well.
Whole apartment and office units will
be built off-site and installed into a
large-scale "building block" skeletal
structure. These apartment or office
blocks will consist of complete interior
wall layouts with plumbing and electrical systems already built-in waiting
to be attached when the block is installed into the main structure. The
heavy cost and lead-time of multiple
trades moving in and out of an onsite
location will be greatly reduced by a
central manufacturing plant that can
be controlled against the delays of
weather and onsite delays.

2028 Olympic Games Set to Shine Light
on Energy-Positive Building
LOS ANGELES, July 20, 2028
- Back in 2017, when the city of
Los Angeles was awarded the 2028
Summer Olympic Games, doubters
said Games organizers would never hit
their goal of the first "Energy Positive
Games." Now on the eve of the 34th
Olympiad, that sustainability goal is
a stunning reality.
Innovations in construction and
building design have helped organizers
achieve their objective. Drones, robotics, embedded sensors, augmented
reality and lighter building materials
have helped revolutionize the job site.
Construction time on average has
dropped by roughly 25percent over
comparable projects of just a decade
ago, drastically reducing the amount
of energy necessary for building.
The athletes' SmartDorms in the
Olympic Village on UCLA's campus
were upgraded with occupants' health
in mind: athletes' wearable smart devices interact with built-in systems to
ensure personalized comfort levels.
New water purification, waste-heat
recovery, energy storage and air filtering systems combine to create net
gains in energy and healthier living
environments.
However, change isn't happening
only in LA. The new generation of
forward-thinking millennial designers
and builders is working across America
and the world to build healthier, more
energy-positive homes and commercial

FL Crane & Sons has experienced first-
hand the rapid evolvement of the
construction industry. The company
was founded when mainstream drywall
use was in its infancy in our region.
While technology continues to advance, we have to ask the question,
"How will the industry change in the
next 10 years in response to today's
and tomorrow's challenges?" This is
nearly impossible to answer with any
accuracy. No one would have thought
in 1947 that our take-offs would be
completed with the aid of computer
software, and that sets of paper plans
are almost nonexistent in our company.
We picture a much different and
much more capable industry within
the next 10 years. The use of effective
technology will likely be the most
visible change in our industry. Tools
such as the Robotic Total Station will
continue to develop and will provide
faster and more accurate layouts. We
will be better equipped and capable of
tracking analytics, such as production
and estimate tracking. We will likely
also see the use of pre-fabrication and
automation on every job site in the
future. Although these are not nearly
all the changes we can expect, even
just these few have already drastically
changed the industry as we know it
today.
