immigrants, Irish immigrants and
other Eastern European immigrants
used this ladder to climb from obscurity and abuse to financial security and
societal equality. What we hope to see
over the next decade is a recognition
that the United States does not have
a lack of skilled workers available. The
workers are here. They go to work every single day behind a cloak of smoke
and mirrors designed to maintain the
status quo for the employers who reap
the rewards of this version of modern
day slavery and politicians who use the
issue to create wedge issues on Election
Day. The skilled worker shortage in
construction is self-inflicted and has
been prolonged by greed, political
ideology and prejudice.
The most significant change in our
industry over the next decade will be
labor and management coming together
to force a resolution to this issue and
restoring the industry's position in
American history as the industry of
opportunity for anyone who is willing
to work hard.

Technology is fast approaching the walls

and ceilings industry; we are already
seeing it sneak in with apps that help
with quick material estimating and

virtual reality. Increased efficiency from
technology will increase competition as
it evens out the playing field between
small and large companies, which
will lead the way for specialization.
By 2028, we predict that superior
craftsmanship will be highly valued,
and fine-tuned skills will allow wall
and ceiling professionals to beat the
competition. The next 10 years will be
gearing us up for a future focused on
customization and specialization, new
tools, materials and methods that will
require trade workers to be experts in
their niche to stand out.

In the next 10 years, the construction

industry will transition from horizontal
construction to vertical construction
as our population increases. The
construction industry will also embrace prefabricated modular building
methods, where building becomes
synonymous to a child playing with
Legos®. Prefabricated modules will
accelerate project completion time,
as the building process will no longer occur at the job site but rather at
the factory where mass production
modules will take place.
Moreover, technological advances
such as artificial intelligence, robotics and drones will be mainstream

devices managers utilize to complete
their projects. Artificial intelligence
will manage buildings that currently
require people to operate. Buildings
with artificial intelligence will be
capable to remain open at all times.
Robots will supplement the labor
force, efficiency and reduce labor costs.
With the implementation of vertical
construction, drones will be useful
for inspections, monitoring and job
assessments.
In the next 10 years, our industry will
implement the technologies, materials
and construction methods developing
today. Perhaps the changes will come
sooner than later.

We believe the next 10 years will continue to be about recovery and driven
by demographics. We expect millennials-now the nation's largest living
generation-to aspire to a lifestyle
that includes purchasing a home and
building a family. We also expect baby
boomers to age in place, downsize to
smaller homes or move in with their
adult children. This should drive more
household formations, new housing
starts, increased home renovations and
a boom in "do-it-for-me" remodeling-all good news for our industry,
but not without challenges.

As we face the reality of major
labor and transportation constraints,
we will need to manage growth by
making appropriate investments at
the right time-and developing new
and innovative business practices,
distribution methods and service
models that improve efficiency and
productivity on and off the job site.
We will also need to embrace technology more readily and new ways
of doing things-such as the use of
robotics, driverless trucks, design-build
collaboration and modular construction-to meet growing demand,
improve productivity and complete
projects faster.
None of this means abandoning the
fundamental elements that characterize
industry leadership-quality, service,
safety, integrity, value, trust and relationships. Over the next 10 years,
we believe success will be defined by
those who evolve, innovate and adapt
to change while remaining true to a
core set of values.

Innovative technology has changed the

way we do business. Nearly every person in the industry has a smartphone/
super compute/video camera in his or
her pocket. Training has advanced the
skill set required to make the most of
