The Clubhouse is organized around a faceted bar that rises in the center of the lounge, culminating in a crystal bottle display under the central skylight. The geometry of this display ripples across the ceiling, creating an abstract geometric canopy that spills up into the two skylights. red oAk A series of distinct spaces pinwheel around the bar – a wood-lined café, curtainwrapped screening room, gallery-like brasserie, and a colorful origami lounge. Art is central to the downtown vibe of the space. Digital finger paintings of lower Manhattan commissioned from New York artist Jorge Colombo animate the café. The restaurant features mixed media works of discarded travel photos. Pillows examine the urban landscape at different scales. Graffiti inspired wallpaper in the bathroom area is illuminated by glowing resin sinks. The more time you spend exploring the lounge, the more it unfolds and reveals itself. “The existing space has no exterior views,” explains architect James Slade. “We wanted to create an interior landscape of views with the bar as the central focal point. Access to the airside lounge was a major obstacle for the construction team because of the tight TSA and customs regulations. In addition there was no freight elevator so everything had to be delivered through a window about 25 feet above exterior grade, on the jetway.” The design relies heavily on the millwork, Slade continues. “Because of the site limitations, millwork allowed us to fabricate quite intricate and complex geometries offsite. The aesthetics could not have been achieved in any other way.” Intricate Woodwork Allegheny Millwork fabricated for the project the leather upholstered custom seating, the “passion pit” seating, the multi-level, multifaceted bar and back bar with faceted mirror, and the faceted wall system clad in cement board, reports Rex Coen, project manager. About half of the walls are woodwork, including the lounge and large sections of every other area. Much of the furniture is also millwork, from banquets to the bar to the countertop in the liquid lounge and the brasserie.
