That’s what Joan Dixon of Alabama did when she decided to renovate the kitchen in her century-old house. Wanting to match the old wood and retain the architectural integrity of the house, Dixon consulted an interior decorator. The decorator directed her to an architectural woodwork firm she had previously worked with that left her highly impressed with their craftsmanship. That firm was Deas Millwork Company, an AWI member firm headquartered in Semmes, Alabama. Deas Millwork designed the entire project which included the bathroom, solarium, kitchen and transitional areas into and out of the house. The firm also fabricated and installed the architectural woodwork as well. The Design The woodworking firm did such a great job on the design process that Dixon asked the firm to step in when problems arose with the original contractor. So the contracting aspects of the project were also handled by Deas Millwork. Ornate Mouldings In addition to needing new cabinets the house had ornate Fir mouldings that needed to be replicated. According to Zach Deas, his company has more than 4,000 knife profiles in stock so they would be able to match anything in the Dixon house. All of the antique mouldings from the original part of the house were matched in the remodeled area. This included doors, standing and running trim and custom built screen doors. At the inception of the project, Dixon had several simple design drawings from a residential designer; however, they were not very detailed. “During our process of generating shop drawings for the casework and the millwork, we ultimately redesigned the entire project and assisted in molding the project into what it would eventually become,” reports Zach Deas. LocAtIon: Semmes, Alabama estAbLIshed: 1998 servIces: Full service custom millwork and casework Deas explains that his team salvaged old tongue and groove ceiling boards that had been behind a drywall ceiling, cleaned them up and then made more material to match. “The original boards had many coats of paint on them that had cracked and chipped away. We put a faux finish on the new material to match the original which aided in the consistent look.” Prior to installation of the new ceiling the new and old material was intermixed to create a seamless appearance.
