While the material makeup is the same from all manufacturers, costs can vary widely now, especially with “Premium” and “High Definition” finishes. For HPDL Countertop edges there are many design and function options. The most common is the self-edge, shown on page 297 of the AWS: Self-Edged No Splash Page 298 of the AWs shows the wide variety of backsplash assemblies: HPDL TOP OPTIONS AT SPLASH HPDL DECK OPTIONS AT SPLASH Self-Edged With Butt Splash Wood edges are durable and can be refinished: Pvc edge can be so thin they are nearly invisible, or thicker 3 mm Pvc can add a decorative and durable element to the edge. t-mold is still used in some sectors: Laminate assemblies can be fire rated. for a class 1 rating, the assembly must have: 1 - Class 1 Fire Rated HPDL 2 - Class 1 Fire Rated Substrate 3 - Class 1 Fire Rated Backer Sheet 4 - Rigid Set Glue Line ralph Wilson pioneered the techniques of post-forming laminates using heat and pressure to mold the plastic to prepared substrates for waterfall and cove effects. these types of counters, when well made, are among the easiest to keep clean: Fully Formed With Coved Splash No Drip Waterfall Edge With Coved Splash Special chemical resistant laminates are manufactured by some companies. They have performance characteristics particularly suited for laboratory and scientific applications. Fire rated laminate and chemical resistant laminate cannot be formed or radiused. Finally a word about costs. Keep in mind laminates vary greatly in price. Familiarize yourself with the true costs of that special material when preparing your project budgets and estimates. Laminate distributors will be delighted to help you learn about their lines. That said, remember materials are usually about one-third of the total cost of the project; the other two-thirds being labor. When the design needs a specific look-and-feel that only expensive laminate can offer, go for it. It will have a long, useful life in service.
