Two ballrooms were built on the second floor with Ash wood flooring and an outdoor deck with stunning views of Lake Washington and Mount Rainier. The HUB books more than 4,000 events per year, including films, dances, concerts, career fairs and conferences for off-campus groups. Alumni have been known to book their wedding receptions in the ballrooms. Design objectives were met, architect Scheer Chan says, by creating a new, long central atrium that cut into the existing building and created an open community space filled with natural daylight and activity. “We created a clean, modern design using warm natural materials such 3/4" Elegant Elm I.W.S. provided the pivot panels, mural, wall and ceiling panels, benches and casework of Eastern Elm veneer and hardwood for the project. Following multiple work sessions with students to establish project goals and visions, one of the major objectives was to use natural materials such as wood while having a strong environmental message, reports Lincoln Johnson, HUB director. “The exclusive use of FSC certified wood for all the major wood finishes promotes a strong environmental message while creating warmth and maintaining a strong connection to nature.” as wood and stone for the major interior spaces reflecting our Pacific Northwest culture.” 10-1/8" 10-1/8" 10-1/8" 50-1/4" ALIGNMENT DOWELS 10-1/8" 3/4" MOTOR FLANGE 1-1/2" 18-1/4" 12-11/16" 3-1/8" 1-1/2" R = 41-1/2" 1-5/8" floor (it was too big to move during construction). About 50 percent of the materials from the old building were recycled into the new one. The original facade, which was seismically strengthened, still stands. But university officials started over with the interior of the 260,000 square-foot building. Almost everything else -- the atriums, ballrooms, lighting and offices -- are new and designed to create a more open, active and welcoming environment. Most of the students’ offices are now located where they’re visible from main walkways and stairwells. One of the project’s overarching goals was connectivity, whether between activities in the building or between the HUB and the campus. Even the plaza and lawn outside the HUB were re-graded to better align with the main entrance. On the southeast corner, a new multi-purpose room, or lyceum, was built for films, lectures and concerts. It has 16-foot windows with sleek wood panels that open and close to control lighting.
