the larger interaction rooms
can be left open to create a
collaborative learning environment between adjacent
classrooms. For flexibility,
each classroom is designed
with storage, a sink and
teacher workstations concealed behind sliding markerboard clad doors.
Houses contain six classrooms, one for each grade,
pre-K to fifth. All houses are
differentiated by color for
identity and interest. Each
house contains locker cubbies, common areas, toilet
facilities and group storage.
The entire team agrees the
sliding marker board doors
were the most challenging
aspect of the project.
"We had to ensure that sixfoot-wide, seven-foot-tall
doors would not warp and
were made to last," says
Steger. "Plus the sliding
door track had to have a soft
close."
Neither the architect nor
the woodworker had ever
created doors such as these.
The doors with the marker
boards fill an entire wall and
closet behind them. In addition, they needed to be built
so they would not slam and
would close tightly as well.
"STR enjoyed working with
Accurate Custom Cabinets
on this project," says CraibCox. "Their attention to detail
was noteworthy. The intricate
detailing of the display and
reception area required
hardware that was not readily
available but they found it,
plus working with many disciplines to ensure a successful
installation was great."
We worked extremely
well together, echoes Steger.
"Initial plans were for a V
groove, and we showed them
a square groove, and collaborated on where to place the
seam and the reveal to hide
the seam."
To sum up the success of
the new Tioga Elementary
School, Novack reports,
"Recently a family called the
school district office. Because
of the look and feel of our
building, they called us thinking we were a private school,
and because of the friendly,
open, vibrant environment,
now want to send their children here!"
