The hotel's 213 oversized contemporary guestrooms and suites offer plenty of room to relax and kick back. Owned by Destination Hotels and Resorts, this boutique hotel is innovative and engaging. In order to achieve that goal, the company brought in the team of Gettys, an architectural firm located in Chicago; Central Wisconsin Woodworking Corporation, an AWI member firm from Wausau, Wisconsin; and Mortenson Construction, a general contractor from Elk Grove Village, Illinois. The project involved conversion of an existing tenant restaurant and hotel lobby into a new 5,000 square foot bar, coffee shop, market, restaurant, and lobby at an approximate cost of $1.5 million in a 90-day period. The existing hotel lobby and restaurant were two separate spaces with a demising wall in between. "The objective was to open up the spaces to each other to create a cohesive and true communal public space but with distinct functional zones," explains architect Louie Sison. "This was achieved by both planning and material selections." The primary design consideration was to create an authentic but uniquely familiar space, not contrived and not a historical restoration, he continues. Creative materials were selected to transform it to have a vintage look in a fresh, contemporary way. I According to Edward Baird of Destination Hotels, "the space needed to be warm and inviting so guests would be encouraged to spend time in the lobby and frequent the coffee bar and market. It also needed to incorporate the authentic Chicago elements to support the hotel's identity of providing hospitality by the mile. The woodwork incorporated into the design supported this." Architectural woodwork elements fabricated for the project by Central Wisconsin Woodworking included a Walnut herringbone ceiling, fireplace wall, reception desk inspired by an old steamer trunk, a back-lit wall of acrylic and lacquered panels, the bar, coffee bar of White Oak with steel counter tops, elevator wall, ceiling panels, retail center, internet bar, dining room paneling, trim and base.
