The illustrations show two types of this
historical joint. The
is the hole
or slot. The
is the tongue or blade
which fits into the slot. The
stops the mortise before it goes all
the way though the wood, while adding a
bit of stability, mechanical locating, and
greater glue surface area. The
is often called a
. In this version both the mortise and tenon are cut
the full width and depth of the two wood
parts.
So, you may ask, why go through all
the trouble? Can't we just push the two
parts together with some glue between
them? We could, of course, but the result
would be a rather weak joint. In addition
to strength, a
being joined and hold
them in position until the adhesive dries.
This reduces the fabrication time, and
speeds the final sanding steps.
Variations of traditional mortise and tenon
joints are often the ideal solution. When
minimal disruption is likely to be applied
to the joint while in use, and the design
aesthetic will permit them, simple lap
joints and full bridle or slot mortise joints
will often speed fabrication.
Glued Butt Joint
From a design professional's viewpoint
it's all about appearance. If a fine, unbroken line at the joint is part of the design
aesthetic, then a sloping haunch or a hidden tenon will be specified.

Edge Glued
We can create a strong, lasting joint
when we glue boards together
. Gluing at right
angles (end grain to edge grain) is weak
because the end grain absorbs a good
deal of the adhesive, and the surface area
of the glue joint is small in relation to
the pressure, torque, or tension usually
applied to the assembly in normal use.

Lap Joint
The main reason for the haunch mortise is usually
. When a hidden
or small loose tenon is used, the joint is
not as strong. As much as one third of the
joint is free floating, with only a minimal
amount of glue on it, if any. When attaching
to milled, solid wood
legs, the tenons are often mitered at the
end because they meet or nearly meet
inside the mortises.
There are other times when the
mortise and tenon are a distinct design
feature. Craftsman style furniture can
use a through-mortise with a wedge or
peg to hold it in place. We see this style
in bookcases, trestle tables, and other
case goods. A well machined set of joints
like these will permit the
for ease of moving, packing,
and reassembling in its new home with
minimum fuss and bother.
