Elearning - Winter 2005 - (Page 7) Editor’snote RETURN ON E-LEARNING Investing in people pays off. T he average business – heck, any business – hardly thinks of training as a profit center. Employee development at most companies is chronically neglected. In my 20 years in and around the software business, I’ve heard dozens of times about million-dollar software implementations that went bad because management got cheap when it came time to train their people to use the stuff. And it only gets worse when the economy hits a rough patch and money gets even tighter than usual. In this month’s cover story, “Measuring the Return on Your E-learning Investments,” Tom Kraak of Accenture makes the point that too many companies – even the ones that do spend money on training — just don’t think their training investments through. It isn’t enough, he says, to simply shove training out to employees. Even quality e-learning programs created by talented people. You need to monitor results to make sure you’re delivering the right training. And as important as the bottom line is to us all, it’s not the most important measure when it comes to training. Tom suggests five different ways to look at the value – the return – you will get from your training investment, that start with a broad definition of “value” and “return” that may not, on the surface, involve dollars and cents – but that clearly will contribute to your company’s success. The article includes several examples of companies that are succeeding by employing these kinds of measures, and elsewhere in this issue you’ll find a number of case studies about companies that have bucked the trend, invested in their people, and are reaping the rewards of those investments. You’ll also find advice from other experts on managing e-learning and creating effective content, as well as information on the latest e-learning products and services As always, Elearning! magazine is here to help you make the most of your e-learning budget.
