But, until now, this has not occurred. The adoption of mobile learning has been constrained by slow networks, limited services, anemic devices, and a hesitancy by organizations to purchase hardware that could soon be obsolete. All of this is now changing, according to Brandon Hall Research. Mobile learning is taking off because the access devices, mobile phones, are already in people’s pockets. In addition, the phones are owned by the learners, not by institutions or large organizations. This makes an enormous psychological difference in terms of learners viewing themselves as being in control of their own learning. Mobile phone companies are now seeing cell phones as the miniature computers in people’s pockets. Smart-phone sales are soaring, while sales of personal digital assistants (PDAs) without phone capabilities remain static. Some predictions indicate that, by 2010, more than 3.2 billion people will own a mobile phone and subscribe to a cellular service. Brandon Hall’s report “Mobile Learning: The Essential Information for Training Professionals“ provides you with the key information you need to understand how mobile learning is changing the face of training. Flash Survey Ranks CLO Competencies The Masie Institute recently conducted a “flash survey” on Technology Competencies for Learning Leaders (e.g. CLO). This was part of founder Elliott Masie’s work as academic director at the Wharton/UPenn CLO Program. Over 930 colleagues from organizations around the world responded. Here are the percentage of respondents that cited certain competencies in a CLO: CEOs See Important Changes on Horizon The IBM Global CEO Study reveals a dramatic increase in the number of global business leaders who see important change ahead. It also highlights how the ability to absorb and manage change is widening the gap between winners and losers in the global economy. CEOs reported a surprising level of optimism about change as an opportunity to build new competitive advantage. Overall, 83 percent of surveyed CEOs expect substantial change in the future, an increase of 28 percent in just two years. However, CEOs report their ability to effectively manage change is increasing at a far slower pace. Collectively, CEOs set their organization’s ability to manage change 22 percentage points lower than their expectations for the level of change they will have to manage — a “change gap” that is widening. CEOs point specifically to their own customer base as the source of the most important changes they will have to address, as two new and more demanding classes of customers emerge: the “information omnivore” (craves all types of information) and the “sociallyminded” (reference corporate social responsibility) customer. The IBM Global CEO Study (“The Enterprise of the Future”) is based on face-to-face interviews with 1,130 CEOs from 40 countries across 32 industries.
