Elearning! - December 2007/January 2008 - (Page 8) News E-commerce Developments Since 1997 Led by Google Learning Hours Increase, Says ASTD Leading organizations increased learning investments in two key areas in 2006, according to a State of the Industry report published by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD). Those key areas are annual expenditure per employee and learning hours. The ASTD’s report was to be e-mailed to members in November. Non-members may purchase pdf or print copies from the Website http://store.astd.org/. The State of the Industry Report is ASTD’s annual review of trends in workplace learning and performance. The report includes data from ASTD BEST Awards Winners, ASTD Benchmarking Forum Members and past year’s data from 1999 to date. The report also concludes that organizations’ investments in learning technologies are paying off through cost savings and efficiency gains as e-learning reaches a high level of sophistication. ASTD estimates that U.S. organizations spend $109.25 billion on employee learning and development annually, with nearly three quarters ($79.75 billion) spent on the internal learning function, and the remainder ($29.50 billion) spent on external services. The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade association for the software and digital information industry, puts Google at the top of its list of developments that have had the most significant impact on electronic commerce since the White House released the “Framework for Global Electronic Commerce” 10 years ago. The list: 1) Google (Sept. 1998): Google did more to fundamentally change the way we use the Internet than any other event in the last 10 years. The simple search engine that began with a couple of smart guys is now used by 30 percent of Internet users to help find precisely what we’re looking for online, map our world, create simple yet highly targeted advertisements and much more. Americans conducted 6.9 billion searches online in February 2007 and nearly half of those were on Google. 2) Broadband penetration of U.S. Internet users reaches 50% (June 2004). 3) eBay Auctions (launched Sept. 1997) 4) Amazon.com (IPO May 1997) 5) Google Ad Words (2000) 6) Open Standards (HTML 4.0 released, 1997) 7) Wi-fi (802.11 launched, 1997) 8) User-generated content (YouTube 2005) 9) iTunes (2001) 10) BlackBerry (1999) For further information, visit www.siia.net. 8 December 2007 / January 2008 Elearning! Customer Relationships In A Web 2.0 World “Customer Relationships in a Web 2.0 World” is a new whitepaper published by The Whetstone Edge, LLC. Companies are losing influence with their customers, who are using Web 2.0’s social media to get insight and information from customer-generated content. “Changing business dynamics are contributing to a growing disconnection between what business practices are serving up and what today’s customers value,” notes Whetstone managing partner John I. Todor, Ph.D. “The net result [is that] businesses are losing influence over customer decision-making, and their products are more rapidly becoming perceived as commodities.” This whitepaper lays out the challenges and the rewards that accrue to companies who overcome these challenges. It spells out a clear framework for shifting the focus of the relationship and building trust essential to relationships that customers’ value. The paper is based, in part, on “Addicted Customers: How to Get Them Hooked on Your Company,” a new book by John I. Todor, Ph.D. It’s a free download at: www.thewhetstoneedge.com//web2.php. http://store.astd.org/ http://Amazon.com http://www.thewhetstoneedge.com//web2.php http://www.thewhetstoneedge.com//web2.php http://www.siia.net
