Annual Report 2008 - (Page 15) BRIDGES With a sizeable inventory of aging bridge structures worldwide, transportation professionals find themselves facing many obstacles and needing more advanced tools for sustaining bridge infrastructure. Bentley’s bridge solution is the most extensive ever offered and addresses virtually any bridge type. Utilizing recent advancements in bridge engineering technology, these software products enhance problem solving at every stage of the project delivery process — planning, design, and engineering to construction simulation and analysis. They have been put to the test on existing structures as well as newly built bridges. Bentley bridge solutions are the foundation for bridge information modeling, or BrIM, an innovative new approach to bridge engineering and project delivery. The goal of BrIM is to utilize and share critical bridge asset information across the range of activities — project selection through decommissioning — in support of bridge lifecycle sustainability. SOLUTIONS IN ACTION: MARINA BAYFRONT PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE The Marina Bayfront Pedestrian Bridge in Singapore uses an unprecedented double helix design — and as a result, significantly less steel — to support a 65-meter-long deck between piers. Design challenges included providing clearance for ships to pass below, keeping the slope gentle enough for foot traffic, linking to a nearby vehicular bridge, and allowing passage for pedestrians under the bridge at each abutment. Arup designers used GenerativeComponents, MicroStation, and other Bentley software to create a 3D model of a new curve geometry that minimized construction costs, cut the time needed to bend the steel, and reduced the amount of waste, all while keeping the exchange and analysis of accurate information easy and efficient. 2007 BE Award Winner Arup Marina Bayfront Pedestrian Bridge Singapore 16
