Bentley provides integrated design software for a variety of disciplines in rail infrastructure planning, design, and construction. These include tools for track design and yard layout, signaling, and traction power supply. Bentley Optram for track maintenance management maximizes the effectiveness of maintenance and renewal expenditure through the use of advanced analytical and predictive tools. SOLUTIONS IN ACTION: EAST LONDON LINE PROJECT Mott MacDonald needed to overcome the complexities of threading a 21st century railway through 19th century infrastructure. Using Bentley topographical surveys and current infrastructure designs, the firm built a 3D model of the London railway in question — much of which did not yet exist. The model allowed the firm to confidently position more than 140 signals along 12 kilometers of rail, quickly expand the design of a train stabling area mid-stage, and develop driver training and route familiarization programs. The visualization that MicroStation enabled delivered more than just accurate assessment of signal sighting issues. The railway model is now used as a tool to make other project design decisions ranging from passenger evacuation analysis to interdisciplinary checks and option assessments. 2007 BE Award Winner Mott MacDonald Ltd.
