Annual Report 2008 - (Page 21) MINING AND METALS In recent years, the mining and metals industry has seen unprecedented demand for materials used in construction, driven by a surge in demand and resulting high commodity prices. This growth is expected to continue, and so the industry’s short-term priority is to rapidly build capacity to bring raw materials to market and take advantage of these high prices. The Bentley solution for mining and metals capital projects offers both short-term and long-term efficiency benefits for the design, procurement, and construction of mines and processing plants. This results from combining central, consistent, and available engineering data with the most comprehensive set of design and analysis tools, for both mining/transportation and ore processing/refining. SOLUTIONS IN ACTION: EVEREST SOUTH PLATINUM MINE Dowding Reynard & Associates designed a technologically advanced recovery plant in Africa serviced by a total of 72 pumps. The design team used Bentley’s AutoPLANT Structural and P&ID products to generate 772 isometric lines and arrangement drawings of 854 tons of structural steel. Both 2D and 3D CAD models were created in conjunction with a project database, which facilitated extracting bills of material. The timely production of annotated 2D drawings and piping isometrics helped Dowding Reynard & Associates achieve its project deadlines. In addition, Bentley software enabled the firm to conduct regular multidisciplinary review sessions in order to eliminate problems before they arose. 2006 BE Award Nominee Dowding Reynard & Associates (Pty), Ltd.
