Annual Report 2008 - (Page 35) Sustaining Infrastructure SUSTAINING OUR PROFESSIONS Sustaining our society and sustaining our environment are not at odds, as demonstrated by projects where technology such as Bentley software leverages their innovation and resourcefulness. But increasingly, the binding constraint is the availability of professionals to design, build, and operate the world’s infrastructure. In particular, the world faces an increasing shortfall in the number of trained engineers available to surmount the growing backlog of infrastructure work. Beyond its product and solution investments and innovations, Bentley is committed to addressing this bottleneck over the short- and long-term by: • Providing new on-demand learning opportunities for infrastructure practitioners to expand their skill sets and to get the most out of the latest available technologies; • Empowering infrastructure professionals to network and share best practices through focused events and online solution communities; • Recognizing outstanding achievement in infrastructure work to raise public awareness about the vital roles that the infrastructure professions play; • Investing in programs to encourage students who enjoy working creatively with computers — starting in middle school and continuing through college — to pursue careers in architecture and engineering. 36
