The Year in Infrastructure 2007 - (Page 135) plant innOVatiOn Projects that present the use of Bentley technology to a new area or particularly innovative application of existing products. They might have required significant investment in customization of tools, or the innovative use of tools deployed in a totally new area without much investment. winner ConocoPhillips Drill-Site Technologies VecO alaska inc The VECO Alaska design team simultaneously engineered drill sites CD3 and CD4 for ConocoPhillips Alaska Inc. Tasked with reusing project data to generate several new drill sites and reduce engineering costs to the client, VECO generated and executed a method for reusing intelligent project data. VECO uses ProjectWise as its design document management system. All 2D and 3D drawings, supporting design documents, and project management documents are stored within it. Because ProjectWise is fully integrated with AutoPLANT, as well as with Bentley’s entire comprehensive portfolio of software, VECO can utilize the security and management of ProjectWise while also taking advantage of AutoPLANT many capabilities. VECO’s data reuse process is much more complex than simply copying documents from one project to another. The process entails 15 steps that must be done in exact order to produce an organized package that includes correct linked documents and data. For example, component tags must be linked across all applications and all tag numbers changed to reflect the new product. VECO created eight custom tools to help with the process. Another custom routine creates a report on all material requisitions and their associated documents based on specific project attributes. Further customization produced a tool to create deliverables in the form of Excel-based reports. VECO used the auto-generated drawing feature in the AutoPLANT I&W application to produce schematics, wiring and loop diagrams, and termination drawings. VECO also uses attributes to “progress” documents — updating the status of an attribute at each state in the routing process. Once a document is accepted at a particular state, users are denied editing rights. VECO uses the “set final status” state to prevent users from doing further modifications.
