The Year in Infrastructure 2007 - (Page 23) 3D-Enabled Design/Construction for General Motors Toledo Transmission Plant Expansion general motors, ghafari associates, l.l.c. finalist General Motors is expanding to produce a new hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed, rear-wheel-drive automatic transmission for full-size SUVs and trucks. The project includes 275,000 square feet of facility renovation and 475,000 square feet of new construction. A large multidisciplinary team comprised of architects, engineers, contractors, detailers, and fabricators from a number of companies collaborated to design and build the facility. GhAFARI Associates led the implementation and deployment of 3D-enabled delivery methodologies and associated technologies. Bentley’s integrated BIM solutions and ProjectWise collaboration servers were used to design and coordinate the architectural, structural, and major facility systems. 3D models were used to integrate facility systems and eliminate thousands of design conflicts prior to construction, and produce highly coordinated construction documents and installation drawings for architectural, structural, and MEP systems. Glickman Tower nBBJ and Korda nemeth finalist The Glickman Tower is a 325,000 square-foot outpatient building on the main campus of the Cleveland Clinic near downtown Cleveland, Ohio. The project consists of 10 abovegrade habitable floors, a habitable basement, and a two-story mechanical penthouse topped by a helipad. The largest challenge was the extremely fast track of the project, which needed to be completed simultaneously with a building that entered design more than four years earlier. Because of the need for speed and efficiency, the decision was made to use BIM — specifically, the TriForma extension of MicroStation, Bentley Structural, and Bentley’s RAM product line. Bentley’s integrated BIM solutions were chosen because they provided the ability to extract 2D drawings from a 3D model as well as a robust rendering engine, and support a collaborative team environment.
