The Vrnata house in Prague, a simple single-story structure with walls of brick and a steel-based roof structure, is located on the outskirts of the city near a small lake. The design challenge was to accommodate a large footprint on a modest site without creating a visually “big” house and to blend the house into its surroundings while maintaining its open and liberating feel. In addition, Dvorak architekti needed to communicate a rather challenging and exacting design to the client, who then needed to communicate it to the construction workers. The 3D model helped Dvorak architekti quickly generate requested views and fax them to the site to answer construction workers’ questions. The roof of the house cantilevers significantly, creating different verandas and outdoor spaces between the house and the open garden. This concept is enhanced by keeping the roof strictly rectangular in plan while the house plan is irregular, although within a rectangular grid. Sandwiched between the roof and the ground are a somewhat closed northern elevation, two small side elevations, and a grand, open southern elevation. The interior is split into public and private sections. In the western half is a combined living, eating, and kitchen area. The eastern half holds four bedrooms and all sanitary and auxiliary rooms. This separation is also indicated on the southern elevation, where the public western part is open (fully glazed), but the private eastern part is partially closed, with window shutters so it can be completely closed. Dvorak architekti used MicroStation to facilitate a 3D model-centered design approach that provided effortless incorporation of input into the design. This also resulted in coordination and integration of all design disciplines and a complete understanding of the building and its components. MicroStation also provided visually easier-tounderstand drawings and renderings, which led to more efficient production. 26 ThE YEAR IN INFRASTRUCTURE 2007
