The Year in Infrastructure 2007 - (Page 44) Building distriButed enterprise Managing Complexity: Facilitating 3D Enabled Delivery on a Series of Automotive Projects general motors, ghafari associates, l.l.c. finalist GhAFARI Associates served as the architect/engineer and 3D integrator on a series of six design-build projects for General Motors where 3D-enabled delivery and BIM were a requirement. The biggest challenge was to facilitate and manage access to thousands of 3D models and associated 2D documents and submittals being constantly updated. General Motors architects and engineers also required continuous access to the active project documentation for timely feedback to the design and construction teams. The interoperability and scalability of Bentley’s BIM solutions allowed multiple team members to collaborate and access the appropriate information at the right time and with the required level of detail at any point in the project. When coupled with the ProjectWise collaboration system, a strong and scalable solution emerged that can support projects of increasing size and complexity. Savannah Center of Standardization us army corps of engineers, savannah, ga finalist The Centers of Standardization is an initiative to consolidate the responsibilities of programming, planning, design and design review, and contracting of specific facility types used by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Through consolidation of these functions — coupled with state-ofthe-art management through the use of lifecycle BIM — the Savannah District Center of Standardization is able to leverage efficiencies in the process for considerable savings. Using Bentley’s integrated BIM solutions, USACE was able to introduce the use of BIM technology and BIM practices into its design and program management efforts. Bentley services also were instrumental in the development of corporate workspace configuration and the training of personnel. BIM helped establish interdiscipline coordination and expedited new workflows associated with BIM as a business process. 44 ThE YEAR IN INFRASTRUCTURE 2007
