The Year in Infrastructure 2007 - (Page 51) Los Angeles River Master Plan Digital Mapping la county department of public Works finalist In 1999, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works created a new planning tool. The map was compiled in a digital environment from aerial photos and from land parcel data and targets areas along the 60 miles of Los Angeles River that could be transformed into public-use space. For the master plan planning, the department used the latest, state-of-the-art computer-mapping technology, including MicroStation, as well as the most advanced methods of photogrammetry. If this preliminary study had been accomplished by traditional means, it would have cost $564,000 and involved on-site surveys, field trips, engineering mapping and review, and map preparation. The cost of its finished planning study was accomplished by aerial orthophotos that only cost about $64,000. Oil Field Development technip germany gmbh finalist This oil field development project in the Middle East covers 20 infield flowlines for oil production water supply and water reinjection with a total length of approximately 100 kilometers within difficult terrain. These flowlines connect the remote well heads with the gas oil separation plant, and the treated oil and gas is exported via two cross-country pipelines with a total length of over 500 kilometers. The challenge of the project was to carry out a conceptual phase and to prepare a tender for the described project within four months. Two CAD operators had to prepare more than 200 drawings as alignment sheets, route maps, and overview drawings, and many reroutings had to be considered. Drawings related to the route selection are almost automatically generated using InRoads and MicroStation VBA. Different coordinate systems are now easily managed using MicroStation GeoGraphics.
