The Year in Infrastructure 2007 - (Page 55) M4 Motorway arup The Ministry for Economic Development and Transport’s “2004 Transport Review” detailed the Welsh Assembly Government’s vision for Wales. Included was a new dual three-lane motorway 15 miles long linking Junction 23A at Magor and Junction 29 at Castleton. Major challenges of the new M4 road include the Usk river crossing, which requires shipping navigation clearances of 25 meters at Newport docks and 27 meters over the river, the accommodation of three railway lines and dock infrastructure, environmental constraints, and a tightly curved and heavily skewed viaduct alignment. Using MicroStation and InRoads, Arup has multiuser access to geometry data and can navigate all elements. It can create all of its 3D elements such as structures, barriers, and curbs, control visibility, and check solutions for safety within full 3D with horizontal and vertical curves. San Francisco — Oakland Bay Bridge East Span california dOt The roadway connecting the skyway section to the existing freeway lanes west of the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza on San Francisco’s Oakland Bay Bridge is called the Oakland Touchdown. Work involves the building of two roadway sections and a new electrical substation, in addition to extensive relocation of underground utilities. At $1.04 billion, it is the largest construction contract ever awarded by the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS). Using MicroStation, InRoads, and other Bentley software, groups of engineers can work remotely and access central project trees for design review and modification. During construction, all vertical and horizontal clearances were verified using 3D tools. CALTRANS had the ability to perform a high degree of integrated design locally and remotely across the network, saving about $100,000 and 100 weeks. BE AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 55
