The Year in Infrastructure 2007 - (Page 70) ciVil VisualiZatiOn and simulatiOn N.W. 25th Street Viaduct florida dOt The N.W. 25th Street Viaduct is a $33-million joint venture between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Miami International Airport. The project’s goal is to increase the capacity of the backbone of the commercial district serving the Miami International Airport’s West Cargo Area. Improvements call for widening N.W. 25th Street to six lanes from N.W. 87th Avenue and four lanes from N.W. 72nd Avenue. The use of MicroStation enabled collaborative work and guaranteed a fully coordinated and integrated design generated by all disciplines. Spatial coordination and a complete understanding of the interface between the building envelope and the services ducts were assured ahead of construction, reducing risk and removing the high corrective costs associated with on-site clashes. Also, within FDOT’s addressing and parcel mapping systems and workflows, address/parcel mismatches were cut from over 8,000 to 2,000. Spaulding Turnpike Improvements Vanasse hangen Brustlin, inc Vanasse hangen Brustlin is assisting the New hampshire Department of Transportation in the design and permitting of long-term traffic operational and safety improvements to an approximately 3.5-mile section of the Spaulding Turnpike. It is developing an Environmental Impact Statement for the revision of six interchanges, addition of two lanes of highway, and other roadwork. Rail, improved bus transit, and other strategies are being considered to reduce overall vehicle volume on the highway. The ease of model creation and network rendering abilities of MicroStation have been pivotal to the project. MicroStation enabled the team to proceed from a hearing plan directly to a model in a couple of hours. Engineering professionals appreciated that the model was registered in exact dimensions, and clients are becoming enamored with the visualization capabilities. 70 ThE YEAR IN INFRASTRUCTURE 2007
