The Year in Infrastructure 2007 - (Page 9) Fore Street hKr architects finalist The Moorgate Telephone Exchange building on Fore Street in London occupies about 115,000 square feet of space on two basement and ground levels and five upper levels, together with six small mezzanine levels in between each of the principal upper floors. The Fore Street post office counter unit totals 5,000 square feet on basement and ground-floor levels. Using Bentley Architecture, the design concept moved from 3D massing, site context, and lighting studies to geometric 3D modeling. Plans and sections were instantly available to begin a two-way design process — 3D and 2D — to optimal accuracy and coordination. Within a TriForma extension for MicroStation managed environment, the use of data sets, 3D cells, and parametric elements allowed for fast updates to the 3D model and 2D plans. New Media Center for the Aller Corporation plh arkitekter as finalist The new building being designed for Aller, one of Denmark’s largest media companies, is situated on the Copenhagen harbor. It is comprised of 18,000 square meters that is distributed over eight floors with more than 600 workplaces. The design is a composition of movements with slightly curved, dynamic facades to create tension against the static quay. Bentley’s BIM solutions continuously checked the accuracy of the complex building design geometry. All of the main drawings were extracted from these 3D models, making corrections much easier to control. Using the new Danish data set significantly facilitated adherence to the Danish national CAD standards, and the 3D visualization dynamically communicated the design to all parties.
