The Year in Infrastructure 2008 - (Page 16) innovation in cadastre and land development Agency for Geo-Information 3D Modeling and Visualization-City of Hamburg Hamburg, Germany the goal of this project was to generate a 3D data set including recognizable buildings and digital terrain models covering all important parts of the city of Hamburg, and then supply a variety of different data formats to support different software solutions. However, the agency found that nontechnical users could not use the data because their hardware performance was insufficient or their software could not handle the large quantity of data. To allow the nontechnical users of the data to visualize the 3D model, the agency used MicroStation to produce PDF files, which can be used without expensive hardware or software upgrades. Ultimately, the data will be stored in an object-orientated database that also supports the exchange formats U3D, DWG, DXF, DGN, and CityGML. The goal of this project was to collect geospatial information from aerial photography and satellite imagery to produce base maps, orthophoto maps, digital terrain models, and a virtual representation of the city. MicroStation was used as a mapping, visualization, and plotting platform, with which architects, engineers, contractors, and GIS professionals integrated their maps and as-built drawings of land, buildings, civil engineering projects, utility networks, and geospatial information. The new system generates output in formats supported by GIS software and plotting devices, and the high quality of data produced is encouraging further projects in data integration. 2008 bE AwARdS oF ExCEllENCE ALSO NOMINATED IN SpEcIAL cATEgOry: SuSTAININg Our SOcIETy SpEc EcIAL cATE Su c cIET 16
