The Year in Infrastructure 2008 - (Page 26) InnovatIon In CommerCIal or resIdentIal BuIldIng – WInner Arup Melbourne Rectangular Stadium Melbourne, Australia Providing a missing link in Melbourne’s sports infrastructure, this new stadium in Australia will be a world-class sporting event and administration complex, featuring a sports campus, elite training center, and sports administration area. The new stadium will accommodate 31,000 fans for soccer, rugby league, and rugby union matches. The stadium will have a cutting-edge bioframe – a lightweight steel design based on the inherent structural efficiencies of the dome – with a geodesic roof that will substantially cover the seating area while letting in maximum sunlight. This design will use 50 percent less steel than a typical stadium roof of the same size. The project team needed a tool to undertake optimization studies on the roof steelwork sizes and geometric configurations as well as to efficiently cope with any changes to the roof geometry during the design process. Arup also wanted to produce a set of tender documents that provided contractors with the size and length of all of the individual steelwork members in the roof. GenerativeComponents was identified as the best solution for modeling the primary roof structure because of its ability to test alternate geometric configurations and to accommodate the final preset values for fabrication and construction. Using GenerativeComponents, Arup created a centerline wireframe model of the structural roof, which was then used by the structural design engineers for analysis. Data exported from the GenerativeComponents model was used for optimization studies of the roof steelwork for each configuration. The final analysis model was imported into Bentley Structural for completion of the 3D model incorporating the final steelwork member sizes. Producing this revolutionary design would not have been feasible without the ability to quickly regenerate different geometric configurations and export the data in a format that could be linked to the analysis software. bE AwARd wINNER ALSO NOMINATED IN SpEcIAL cATEgOry: ATTAININg rETurN ON INNOvATION SpEc EcIAL cATE rETurN ur INNOv WinnEr 26
