The Year in Infrastructure 2008 - (Page 27) InnovatIon In CommerCIal or resIdentIal BuIldIng CCC Dubai Mall Project Burj Dubai, United Arab Emirates Located in the heart of downtown Burj Dubai in the united Arab Emirates, the Dubai Mall will be one of the largest malls in the world. One of the major challenges in building this complex megaproject is quantifying the structural concrete works. The contract required CCC to provide detailed quantity surveying valuation sheets and bill of materials for every concrete element in the more than 30 buildings. This demanding task was budgeted to require a team of 25 members on site for at least three years to deliver an average of 360 valuation sheets per building, totaling about 1,000 pages per quantity surveying document. CCC’s Building Information Modeling center created a Bentley solutions-based quantity surveying system to provide an accurate, efficient, and automated tool for developing monthly valuation sheets and used MicroStation VBA and TriForma to develop all the needed tools, utilities, and quantity surveying systems incorporating all the business rules and methods of measurement boundaries. The system automated production of more than 95 percent of the quantity surveying valuation sheets while drastically improving the quality and efficiency of the quantity surveying process. As a result, the cost of this task was reduced by more than 65 percent. Located in Dubai’s tourist-rich river district, the spectacular development will feature four signature towers inspired by the movement of candlelight. The goal of the Dubai Towers project was to create a framework for generating one tower in 3D and applying the same logic to the other three towers. Adopting a parametric approach enabled the project team to not only rationalize the design but also record each design detail and modify the shapes of the flickering flames for each tower by numerical inputs. Design studies that would have taken two or three weeks were accomplished within a day. Being able to modify designs easily and see the repercussions throughout major building systems was critical in moving such a complex project forward. GenerativeComponents provided custom controls that generated and modified the extremely complex geometries of the iconic project, which drastically reduced the time required to visualize the effects of modifications to the form and the impact on structure, core placement, and the curtain wall system.
