The futuristic aluminum and glass exterior, underground parking, turnstile security, and marble floors and walls will ensure a commercial building fit for the 21st century. The project team was widely distributed around the world, with partners in Dubai, Sydney, the United Kingdom, and Italy. The team used Bentley Structural so that optimized design data could be exchanged quickly and efficiently without continual manual remodeling. Using Steel Detailing Neutral Format (SDNF) exports allowed the team to rapidly exchange steelwork models with the steel contractor and to continue the detailing process without reworking. The site landform and surrounding area has been substantially changed over time by industrial activity, mineral working, and tipping. In the late 1800s the British Iron Works occupied the central site area. The site is being developed for 700 residential units, retail, and commercial use for the local community of about 3,000. Led by Arup, the project team used InRoads to scan maps, sketches, and archived maps from the 19th century as well as to verify proposed surfaces. All volumes have been made on a virtual 3D model, which allows for improved efficiency and quality and enables Arup to be more competitive. 2008 bE AwARdS oF ExCEllENCE ALSO NOMINATED IN SpEcIAL cATEgOry: SuSTAININg Our ENvIrONMENT SpEc EcIAL cATE Su vIr vI I 30
