The Year in Infrastructure 2008 - (Page 32) InnovatIon In CommerCIal or resIdentIal BuIldIng Bentel Associates International New Central Terminal Building at OR Tambo International Airport Gauteng, South Africa the Or tambo international Airport, Africa’s busiest airport, is expecting passenger throughput to increase by as much as 28 percent by 2010 when the country is expecting an influx of tourists for the soccer World Cup. In preparation, this project integrated the international terminal building and the domestic terminal building into a single terminal. The primary challenge of the conceptual design was the dual function for the atrium. The 3D geometry required in properly combining all elements placed high demands on the modeling software. The architects used MicroStation as a hub between the various peripheral software platforms, enabling the interface of various complex structural and architectural forms. The aesthetic of the building is derived primarily from its structural elements, foremost among them being precast concrete panels. MicroStation and Bentley Architecture enabled the firm to work in 2D and 3D environments without changing software, leverage other types of software through the importing and exporting of other file formats, and better manage documentation processes and outputs through CAD standards. Bentley’s federated data model enabled modularization and reuse of building components throughout the project. 2008 bE AwARdS oF ExCEllENCE ALSO NOMINATED IN SpEcIAL cATEgOry: ATTAININg rETurN ON INNOvATION SpEc EcIAL cATE rETurN ur INNOv 32
