St. Charles Community Hospital London, United Kingdom this newly refurbished three-story healthcare facility will provide primary care and local community services with facilities specializing in injuries, dental surgeries, podiatry treatment, x-ray imaging, GP surgeries, and a new renal dialysis facility. The building is of significant architectural interest but with limited interior services space. The primary goal of the project was to use natural ventilation in the building to enable a low-energy, sustainable solution that complied with U.K. building regulations. A 3D model of the building was constructed using Hevacomp’s CAD input program. An analysis of overheating was conducted using Hevacomp’s Design Simulation package to determine the frequency of overheating, which turned out to be a significant problem and justified the need for mechanical cooling in some areas. Land has been conserved by accommodating police vehicles, firing range, and service needs on the basement level, including a vehicular ramp as part of the design. Working entirely in MicroStation and TriForma to produce the model and then generate photorealistic renderings and animations reduced the team’s effort and allowed time to explore various concepts. With the images, the team was able to not only limit the number of required meetings with the client, but also take weeks out of the preliminary design process. 2008 bE AwARdS oF ExCEllENCE ALSO NOMINATED IN SpEcIAL cATEgOry: cOMMuNIcATINg ThrOugh VISuALIzATION SpEc EcIAL cATE u uNIc ugh V uALIz ALIzATION 34
