The concept of Sustaining Infrastructure is an organizing principle for Bentley and a concept around which it rallies not only its colleagues, but also its users and third-party partners. Sustaining Infrastructure is built on the three pillars of Sustaining Our Society, Sustaining Our Environment, and Sustaining the Professions. As such, the Special Awards included categories for projects demonstrating contributions in each of these areas. In addition, the 2008 BE Awards of Excellence program featured projects that clearly communicate the impact of a project within a community; effectively connect diverse, globally distributed teams and resources; and maximize our collective returns on investment through innovation. The following projects exemplify the best of innovative technologies to make significant contributions to Sustaining Infrastructure on behalf of all of us. SuStAining Our EnvirOnMEnt (page 5) This category of projects improves the sustainability of the earth by optimizing the use of natural resources while reducing or mitigating the detrimental effects of human activity on the global environment. SuStAining Our SOciEty (page 6) The purpose and impact of the projects in this category are to create, improve, or sustain the quality of life for the populations interacting with and relying on the resulting infrastructure asset. DEvELOPing tHE inFrAStructurE WOrKFOrcE (page 7) Projects in this category have demonstrated a commitment to expanding the size, quality, and/or longevity of the global pool of infrastructure professionals. cOMMunicAting tHrOugH viSuALiZAtiOn (page 8) This category represents projects that have deployed Bentley’s advanced visualization capabilities to enhance the quality, productivity, or presentation of the delivered project. 2008 bE AwARdS oF ExCEllENCE cOnnEcting PrOJEct tEAMS (page 9) These projects demonstrate collaboration by connecting people and information across project teams – no matter where they are located – to provide a single source of project truth for all information. AttAining rEturn On innnOvAtiOn (page 10) Projects in this category illustrate how the investment in Bentley technology has resulted in innovative methods or work processes in one or more lifecycle phases, resulting in a measurable return for the project and/or organization. 4
