The Year in Infrastructure 2008 - (Page 7) Developing the infrastructure Workforce – Winner Gresham, Smith and Partners Nissan Americas Corporate Facility Franklin, Tennessee, United States When nissan north America decided to relocate its operations in gardena, Calif., to a new facility in Franklin, Tenn., Gresham, Smith and Partners (GS&P) was tasked with planning and designing the new facility. Since Nissan chose to move current operations to temporary office space while the new facility was being built, keeping the schedule on track was a crucial component. GS&P leveraged the communication abilities between Bentley RAM and TriForma to automatically generate the structural steel framing plans for the entire building, saving time and reducing errors. The analytical model was used to generate an advanced bill of materials that, in conjunction with hard-copy drawings, enabled the firm to secure bids from steel fabricators weeks ahead of schedule. GS&P coupled Building Information Modeling with integrated project delivery methods to secure the services of a structural steel detailer prior to awarding the fabrication contract. When the structural analysis model was refined and passed on to the steel detailer to begin structural steel shop drawings, 98 percent of the steel members required no modification. Using integrated project delivery enabled GS&P to overcome major schedule obstacles by leveraging the intelligence in 3D models and the experience of its team members, all to the benefit of the client. The firm realizes that employee retention is a cost-saving opportunity that will improve the company’s overall success in projects such as this, so it strives to attract, retain, and mentor the best the workforce has to offer. Employees are provided avenues to acquire all necessary training, including CAD product training on a variety of Bentley solutions through the Bentley LEARN server and Enterprise Training Subscription program, which has reduced turnover as well as the costs of training new staff. bE AwARd wINNER WinnEr 7 ALSO NOMINATED IN INDuSTry CATEgOry: INNOvATION IN COMMErCIAL Or rESIDENTIAL BuILDINg I uSTry CATE ST ATEg I v OMME BuILDIN 7
