The Year in Infrastructure 2008 - (Page 70) InnovatIon In MIlItary InstallatIons, CaMpuses, and aIrports – WInner Port of Long Beach Port of Long Beach CAD/GIS Project Plan Long Beach, California, United States the Port of Long Beach is a department of the city of Long Beach, calif. The port is a major transportation and trade center, providing the shipping terminals for nearly one-third of the waterborne trade moving through the West Coast. The economic impact of the port affects not only the city, but also the entire United States. To improve the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of engineering data, as well as ensure interoperability with GIS, the Port of Long Beach standardized on a common CAD platform and developed a comprehensive standards manual that leveraged this platform. The Port had been using multiple disparate engineering software programs that required data re-creation and had no central storage. This led to multiple data sets and a lack of communication among employees. Standardizing on the Bentley platform would solve these immediate problems and produce long-term financial and technical benefits. Project goals were achieved by analyzing as-is workflows and proposing to-be workflows that leverage the new Bentley configured software; developing the system’s functional ALSO NOMINATED IN SpEcIAL cATEgOry: SuSTAININg Our SOcIETy SpEc EcIAL cATE Su c cIET and technical specifications; migrating the current document management system data and as-built database; identifying new hardware and software specifications; creating a comprehensive CAD standards manual and consultant guidelines; deploying and configuring ProjectWise and Bentley Map; integrating applications; benchmarking; and training users. Bentley’s commitment to interoperability was used as a model for the organization’s engineering software developers. Bentley’s integrated CAD, GIS, Building Information Modeling, and server technologies make the Port of Long Beach more productive and allow its engineers to focus on design rather than technology. The staff can now easily access accurate digital information, and the team is confident it will make the organization more competitive.
