off from what they will experience in the real world.” In 2007, more than 200 teams participated in 18 conference competitions. Winners of the regional competitions earned their place in the national competition, as did teams that placed second in regional competitions in which the winner placed in the top ﬁve in the previous year’s national competition. Twenty-two teams of engineering students from the United States and Canada were present in Seattle, Washington, on June 14–16 to vie for ﬁrst place in the National Concrete Canoe Competition. Seventy-ﬁve percent of a team’s score is based on academic requirements, with the remaining 25 percent based upon ﬁve racing events. For the academic portion, teams are judged on engineering design and construction principles, as exhibited in their canoe and display; a technical design report on the planning, development, testing, and construction of their canoe; and a formal presentation that highlights innovation in design and construction. Five independent judges, chosen by ASCE and BASF for their experience in the ﬁeld and their knowledge of concrete, peppered the student teams with questions, ran tests for weight, ﬂotation, and durability, and determined the winners. In addition to the overall winners—with scholarships and trophies for ﬁrst through third place—several special awards were presented. The Spirit of Competition Award was presented to École de technologie v First Place: University of Wisconsin—Madison supérieure (Montreal, Quebec), the sole Canadian team at the National competition. Its enthusiasm was infectious, and the sportsmanship in cheering on all teams was unparalleled. The American Concrete Institute Excellence in Concrete Canoe Design Award was captured by the California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo team for its application of common design principles in original ways. The full-length, mosaic tile design of their canoe, named M.C. Escher, beautifully overcame the challenge of adding an inlay without compromising structural integrity. Indeed, the mosaic ﬂoor became integral to the structural design and even improved it. The Tony P. Chrest Innovation Award went to the University of Wisconsin–Platteville team for creative use of technology and materials in construction of its canoe, Whiskey Tech.
