BE CONFERENCE IN REVIEW Making the Cut Industry experts from around the world take on the arduous task of judging which projects best exemplify innovation and imagination W e polled the passionate jurors of the 2007 BE Awards of Excellence and they enthusiastically expressed sentiments that reﬂect the highest respect for the vision and technical mastery that this year’s several hundred nominations embodied. Here is a sampling of comments made by this international panel composed of previous BE Award winners, Bentley users, editors and publishers, and industry and discipline experts. “Being a member on the jury provided me wth an opportunity to observe some of the most difﬁcult industry challenges that are being successfully solved and built. Each year, the complexity of the projects, the difﬁculty of the challenges, and the elegance of the solutions continue to amaze me,” said Walker Lee Evey, president of the Design Build Institute of America. “Suddenly and dramatically, architects and engineers are able to harness the limitless power of technology to create solutions limited only by their own powers of imagination. The coupling of software with other technological advances has created a work environment where projects that were impossible just a few years ago are now being planned and built. We are entering a new golden age of design and engineering achievement made possible by these enlightened tools and their gifted owners.” David Marion, O.L.S., O.L.I.P, manager of geomatics for the City of Mississauga, Canada, noted, “It’s becoming increasingly evident that geospatial technology, when integrated into other mission-critical systems, provides a whole new scale of ROI. An audit would show that the hard dollar savings combined with unexpected beneﬁts, such as efﬁciencies in service deliveries, will make it easier for other industry groups to prepare business cases to move future projects ahead. These examples also point to a trend of greater cooperation and interoperability between technologies that seemed unconnected or noncomplementary in the past (for instance, GIS and ﬁnance).” Matt Ball, editor/associate publisher of GeoTec Media’s GeoWorld, agreed. “The extension of the geospatial toolset to operational status within large enterprises places the tools and the beneﬁts of the full picture into the hands of everyone within an organization. This enterprise geospatial approach is becoming more common as the integrative nature of geospatial technology is further realized as a means to bring large systems together for greatly improved decision support.” He cited an example: “One project that illustrated these beneﬁts most clearly was the winner of Geospatial Innovation 18 BE MAGAZINE | Volume 4, Issue 3
