BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 3 - (Page 19) award. The Dutch Ministry of Finance integrated geospatial tools within its SAP enterprise resource planning application. The complexity of such an integration has been a barrier for some organizations that have contemplated such a move. The clear benefits that this organization achieved, and its roadmap of success, should inspire other organizations to make this leap.” Greg Schindler P.E., S.E., an editorial board member of Structure Magazine, said, “It is clear that the nominated projects were accomplished by individuals and firms that are out on the cutting edge of 3D CAD and BIM technology. Generally, the majority of design firms, at least in the United States, are just beginning to move to 3D depiction of their designs. BIM tends to be viewed as a scary new world for many in the building design business. It is evident that the projects submitted are examples of what can be done with this new technology by designers willing to jump in and use the tools to their advantage.” Evey added, “Historically, limitations in workforce size and in computational modeling capability have shortened mankind’s creative horizon. Visionary projects that were possible were not ‘doable’ because the design work involved was simply too time-consuming and laborious. Modern software tools, however, have transformed the civil infrastructure workplace, empowering the workforce and providing a range of solutions that could only be dreamed of before.” Earl Mark, Ph.D., associate professor/ CTO at the University of Virginia School of Architecture, was especially impressed by the geographical distribution of the projects, including work from Eastern Europe and Asia. Mark found heartwarming “the apparent effect the award had on middle school/high school student winner Stefan Egger, who was grateful for the opportunity to travel to LA with his teacher from Austria, and perhaps helping to establish a level of confidence and recognition that may well influence his future plans. It would be wonderful to document how this award may have influenced his future thinking and direction.” MEET THE 2007 OF EXCELLENCE Building BE AWARDS JURORS Geospatial Chuck Eastman, Georgia Institute of Technology (second from left) Kristine Fallon, Kristine Fallon Associates, Inc.
