BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 3 - (Page 2) QUICK TAKES Rising to the Challenge his issue of BE Magazine is very much about meeting today’s and tomorrow’s challenges—transportation challenges, civil engineering resource challenges, growing infrastructure challenges, and information technology challenges. In “More ITS Sightings” (page 6), Transportation Management & Engineering Magazine’s Al Karr explains that although intelligent transportation system (ITS) technology is only now reaching adolescence, the industry has developed a profusion of technology providers. ITS now ranges from cell phones, PDAs, vehicle navigation systems, and electronic toll collection systems all the way to highway traffic monitoring and reporting networks. Electronic methods of monitoring and controlling traffic provide an alternative to adding new lanes of concrete and asphalt to meet future transportation needs. Looking beyond these logistical challenges to those of nurturing tomorrow’s civil engineers, Bentley’s Laura Meier relates how the “America’s Cup of Civil Engineering” is won not by the speed of sails but by the strength of concrete. In “Racing Concrete Canoes” on page 12, Meier describes the 20th annual American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition, whose exciting three days of competition were the culmination of a year’s worth of project management, design challenges, and fundraising efforts of a talented group of potential civil engineers. For those who missed BE Conference 2007 in Los Angeles and BE Conference Europe in London, this issue provides a special BE Conference section that begins on page 16. BE Conference is dedicated to learning and innovation, and applying both to the challenges of helping infrastructure professionals streamline workflows, increase productivity, and improve project quality. It encompassed 175 best practices sessions, 170 new technology sessions, and 30,000 learning units of professional training in more than 470 courses. The 2007 BE Awards of Excellence program, which honors the extraordinary work of Bentley users who meet the many challenges of improving the world’s infrastructure, reached a crescendo in Los Angeles as the winners were announced (page 17) at a celebratory gala. New to the agenda this year was the People’s Choice Awards 2007, in which BE Conference attendees cast their ballots for their personal favorites (page 20) among 234 BE Award project nominations across 31 categories. Our BE Conference coverage concludes with highlights of executive keynotes (page 24). CEO Greg Bentley, Senior Vice President Bhupinder Singh, Senior Vice President Buddy Cleveland, CTO Keith Bentley, and COO Malcolm Walter provide insight on current and future challenges facing the infrastructure community, along with details on advanced software products and solutions already available or in the works to meet them. Links to videos of the complete presentations are provided.
