BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 3 - (Page 21) BUILDING LJB Inc Wells Fargo Home Mortgage T he challenge of this project was to create a sophisticated Class A office space to consolidate the operations of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage in Frederick, Maryland. The complicated tilt-up office design includes a series of interconnected structures that are all three stories tall and total more than 310,000 square feet. From onset to completion, the schedule for this project was only 19 months. The Wells Fargo complex is one of the largest multistory tilt-up office structures ever built, according to the Tilt-Up Concrete Association. By using building information modeling (BIM), LJB was able to complete the foun- dations, floor slab, and exterior walls in under 90 days. LJB has customized its BIM software to suit the special needs of tilt-up construction. A library of hundreds of structural shapes is used for placing wall panels and foundations. VBA programs automate such tasks as positioning the inserts required to lift each wall panel. The construction process was complicated by the size of the project. Traditional casting slabs were not large enough to accommodate construction of all the wall panels, so casting beds were used for each building. The wall panels required so much bracing that the project team created a layout for the bracing to keep steel erection on schedule. To create an attractive exterior, the wall panels feature an earth-tone color scheme and include numerous fenestrations and recesses. The large window areas in the perimeter wall panels required innovative floor framing solutions. CIVIL U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh Montgomery Lock and Dam Lift Gate With the overall weight and center of gravity being a critical factor in the design of the new gates, the use of 3D modeling was essential. USACE enabled a design that was more efficient, robust, redundant, and resilient than the original, and also included the reuse of exist- ing hoist machinery and its limited lifting capacity—constraints imposed by compatibility with the geometry of the existing pier, alignment of lifting points, and mating of embedded metal sealing surfaces with the sealing surface of the gate. L ocated 34 miles downstream of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Montgomery Dam Lift Gate is the second busiest inland port in the nation. When the gates were destroyed in a 2006 navigation accident, the Ohio River flowed unchecked, threatening navigation from the lock to Port of Pittsburgh. The USACE Pittsburgh District responded to the emergency by temporarily closing the dam gate bays and initiating fast-track design of replacement lift gates that would meet current design criteria, including forces resulting from barge impacts. Complicating matters, the new engineering solution was predicated on reusing the 1936 vintage gate-lifting machinery while ensuring that the new gates would be readily adaptable to a future new-generation hydraulic lifting system.
